Ian MacKelvie, LICSW

Psychotherapist

I am a licensed therapist with a physical office space in Seattle, located in Upper Queen Anne. I am also licensed to provide therapy remotely to anybody living in California or Washington. Besides specialising in somatic psychotherapy, I also run workshops and help other therapists interested in somatic techniques receive supervision while completing their hours for licensure.

Somatic Psychotherapy -Therapy without the Fluff

Early on, I noticed that a lot of therapists were able to be kind and supportive, but they would struggle when the work became more challenging. I was one of those therapists, but I didn’t know it at the time.

In my late 20s, I saw a somatic therapist and saw just how fragile the version of me I’d been showing the world really was. Initially, I couldn’t tolerate it. So I quit, under the common statement, “I need to take a break”. Really I was having difficulty feeling what the work brought up.

But a year later, after a major traumatic loss, I went back to that same therapist and stayed. That work changed how I understand people and relationships, and how I continue to practice today. I found that the temporary discomfort, although difficult, was well worth where I am now.

A Bit About Me

I grew up in LA but spent my adult years in a small town. Because of that, I am definitely more comfortable with seeing patients and others out and about in the world. Farmers markets, trails, coffee shops, and performances are haunts where you’ll likely find me.

I recently relocated to Seattle with my spouse and new born baby! We chose to move back to where she grew up in Seattle, and utilize the additional support that comes from being closer to family.

What methods do you use?

While informed by cognitive and experiential therapies, my practice is rooted in somatic psychotherapy, and uses interventions that help connect cognitive insights with deeper embodiment. I integrate neurobiology, attachment theory, and developmental and depth psychology to create a grounded, body-based path for change.

Who do you work with?

I work with adults and teens struggling with emotional concerns and relationships. At the time of this writing my oldest patient is in their 70’s and my youngest is 14.

They range from the unemployed to the business magnate. From the depressed to the manic. From couples with full grown kids, to couples deciding if they should move in together. From different racial backgrounds, to different sexual orientations. The common denominator, a desire to feel better and to learn more about how they function in the world.

In-Person or Remote

My office is located in Upper Queen Anne, serving Magnolia, Ballard, Fremont, Interbay and the greater Seattle area. My office space is private and quiet, with free parking nearby. I also offer remote sessions for those in Washington or California who prefer online work or want to avoid Seattle traffic. There are several amenities nearby if you are looking for getting some chores done as well.
